Trekking Mount Meru with Marangu Treks Travel

Located inside Arusha National Park, Mount Meru (4,566 m / 14,980 ft) offers one of Tanzania’s most scenic and rewarding treks. It is ideal as a standalone adventure or for acclimatization before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
We offer both 3-day and 4-day itineraries, depending on your schedule and acclimatization needs.

3-Day Mount Meru Itinerary

Overview
The 3-day climb is a faster-paced option suitable for trekkers with good fitness and some prior altitude experience. It reaches the summit successfully but with less time for acclimatization.

Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
Elevation: 1,500 m to 2,500 m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
After registration at Momella Gate, the trek begins through open grasslands and forest. You may spot wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, and monkeys. An armed ranger accompanies the group for safety.
You ascend gradually to Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
Elevation: 2,500 m to 3,570 m
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
The trail climbs steeply through forest into moorland terrain. Along the way, enjoy views of the Meru crater and surrounding landscapes.
Arrive at Saddle Hut, located between Little Meru and the main peak. In the afternoon, you may take a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru.

Day 3: Summit – Momella Gate – Return
Elevation: 3,570 m to 4,566 m (summit), then descend
Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
Summit attempt begins around midnight. You’ll hike along a narrow ridge to reach Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru, at sunrise.
Enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro before descending back to Saddle Hut, then continue down to Momella Gate.
Transfer back to Arusha/Moshi.

Mount Meru 4-Day Itinerary

Overview
The 4-day Mount Meru climb is the recommended option for most trekkers. It allows for a gradual ascent, better acclimatization, and a higher summit success rate, while giving you more time to enjoy the mountain’s unique landscapes and wildlife inside Arusha National Park.
Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
Elevation: 1,500 m to 2,500 m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours


After breakfast, transfer to Momella Gate for registration and meet your guide and armed ranger. The trek begins through open grasslands where wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, and antelope can often be seen.
The trail continues through dense forest with beautiful scenery and occasional waterfalls. You’ll arrive at Miriakamba Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll have dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
Elevation: 2,500 m to 3,570 m
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours

Today’s hike is steeper as you move from forest into moorland vegetation. Along the way, enjoy expanding views of the Meru crater and surrounding plains.
After arriving at Saddle Hut, you’ll have lunch and time to rest. In the afternoon, you can take a short hike toward Little Meru (3,820 m) before returning to the hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Saddle Hut – Little Meru – Saddle Hut
Elevation: 3,570 m to 3,820 m (Little Meru)
Hiking Time: 2–4 hours (optional hikes and rest)
This day is spent around Saddle Hut to help your body adjust to the altitude before the summit attempt. After breakfast, you will take a gradual hike toward Little Meru, offering stunning views of the crater and surrounding landscape.
After the hike, return to Saddle Hut for lunch and spend the rest of the day resting, hydrating, and preparing for the summit climb. An early dinner is served before going to bed in preparation for a midnight start.

Day 4: Summit Day – Socialist Peak – Momella Gate
Elevation: 3,570 m to 4,566 m, then descend
Hiking Time: 10–12 hours

Your summit attempt begins around midnight. The trail follows a narrow ridge along the crater rim, offering a thrilling and scenic climb under the stars.
You will reach Socialist Peak (4,566 m) at sunrise, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Meru crater below.
After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Momella Gate. Transfer back to Arusha/Moshi.
