Marangu Route: Mt Kilimanjararo Trekking

Kilimanjaro Trekking Marangu Route

Marangu Route – Mount Kilimanjaro

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its accessibility and comfort, it remains one of the most popular routes for climbers seeking a classic trekking experience to the summit at Uhuru Peak.
What sets the Marangu Route apart from other Kilimanjaro trails is its unique accommodation style. It is the only route that does not permit camping. Instead, trekkers stay in permanent, dormitory-style huts at each stage of the climb. These huts—located at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo—offer bunk beds with basic mattresses and pillows, providing shelter and added comfort, especially during the rainy season (April and May).
Each hut is well-structured, with Mandara and Kibo offering approximately 60 bunk beds each, while Horombo Hut accommodates up to 120 climbers. Basic amenities such as bottled water, soft drinks, and snacks are available for purchase along the route, contributing to its nickname, the “Coca-Cola Route.”
The Marangu Route is known for its gradual and steady ascent, making it a favorable choice for trekkers seeking a less technically demanding climb. However, it should not be underestimated. The approach to Kibo Hut involves a significant elevation gain of approximately 1,000 meters in a single day, and summit night remains physically and mentally challenging regardless of the route.
One of the key advantages of the Marangu Route is its shorter itinerary. Climbers can reach the summit in as little as five days, making it an ideal option for those with limited time. Despite its shorter duration, the route still delivers breathtaking scenery and a rewarding journey to the “Roof of Africa.”
