8 Day Lemosho Route Overview

The 8-day Lemosho Route is widely considered the best itinerary for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro due to its excellent acclimatization profile and high summit success rate.

8-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Lemosho Gate (2,100m) → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The trek starts with a gentle walk through dense forest. Wildlife sightings are common.
The gradual ascent helps ease into the trek.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m) → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

You climb out of the forest into moorland, with expanding views of the mountain.
The trail becomes steeper but manageable.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) → Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

A relatively easy day crossing the Shira Plateau.
This helps with acclimatization and provides stunning scenery.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

Climb to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp.
This is a key acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,950m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)

After climbing Barranco Wall, continue to Karanga Camp.

Midnight summit attempt. After reaching Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
