7 Day Rongai Route Overview

The 7-day Rongai Route offers a more gradual ascent and better acclimatization compared to the 6-day option. This increases summit success rates and makes the climb more comfortable.
Starting from the quiet northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, this itinerary provides stunning views, fewer crowds, and a peaceful trekking experience. It is ideal for climbers who prefer a less busy route with improved safety and success.

7-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) → Simba Camp (2,600m)
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest / Farmland

The trek begins with a gradual ascent through forest and farmland. The trail is quiet and scenic, offering a relaxed introduction to the climb.
Overnight: Simba Camp

Day 2: Simba Camp (2,600m) → Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Climb steadily through open moorland with expansive views. The dry climate makes trekking conditions more comfortable.
Overnight: Second Cave Camp

Day 3: Second Cave Camp (3,450m) → Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

A shorter trekking day allows gradual acclimatization. The trail becomes steeper toward Kikelewa Camp.
Overnight: Kikelewa Camp

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) → Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

A steep climb leads to Mawenzi Tarn, with dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak. The environment is rugged and beautiful.
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp – Acclimatization Day
Distance: 4–5 km (optional hike)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

This important acclimatization day includes a short hike to higher altitude before returning to camp.
This helps the body adjust and prepares climbers for the summit attempt.
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp → Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

Cross the saddle toward Kibo Hut. The terrain is dry and exposed.
Upon arrival, rest and prepare for summit night.
Overnight: Kibo Hut

Day 7: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Marangu Gate (1,870m)
Distance: 22 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest

Midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak. After reaching the summit, descend via Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate.
