The 6-day Umbwe Route is the steepest and most direct route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its rapid ascent, remote trails, and challenging terrain.
This route is best suited for experienced climbers who are confident in their physical fitness and have prior high-altitude trekking experience. Due to its fast elevation gain, acclimatization is limited, making it one of the more demanding routes on the mountain.
Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,600m) → Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
The trek begins with a steep ascent through dense rainforest. The trail is narrow, rugged, and less traveled compared to other routes.
The climb is continuous and demanding, gaining significant altitude on the first day.
Overnight: Umbwe Cave Camp
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Semi-desert
The trail continues steeply, leaving the forest and entering moorland. The route joins the Machame trail at Barranco Camp.
The scenery becomes dramatic, with views of valleys and ridges.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 3: Barranco Camp (3,950m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
The day starts with the climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble.
After crossing ridges and valleys, you arrive at Karanga Camp.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 4: Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
A steady climb leads to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit attempt.
Rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 5: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic → Moorland
The summit attempt begins at midnight. Climbers ascend steeply to Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak.
After reaching the summit, descend to Mweka Camp for rest.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
A steady descent through rainforest leads to Mweka Gate.
