6 Day Machame Route: Mt Kilimanjararo Trekking

Kilimanjaro Trekking Machame Route

6 Day Machame Route Overview

The 6-day Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This itinerary follows a relatively fast ascent profile, combining breathtaking landscapes with a physically demanding schedule.
Trekkers experience diverse ecosystems—from lush rainforest to alpine desert and arctic summit conditions. While the route offers excellent views and a rewarding challenge, the shorter duration means less acclimatization time, making it best suited for fit climbers or those with prior high-altitude experience.

6-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (3,000m)
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The trek begins at Machame Gate after registration. The trail climbs steadily through dense rainforest, where you may encounter monkeys, birds, and unique plant species.
The path can be muddy and humid, requiring good footing. By late afternoon, you reach Machame Camp, located above the forest line.
Overnight: Machame Camp

Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) → Shira Camp (3,840m)
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

The trail becomes steeper as you leave the forest and enter moorland terrain. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations.
You’ll gain altitude quickly but at a manageable pace. Upon reaching Shira Camp, you’ll enjoy wide views across the Shira Plateau.
Overnight: Shira Camp

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)
Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

This is a key acclimatization day. The trek climbs to Lava Tower, where you reach over 4,600 meters. After lunch, you descend to Barranco Camp.
This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to altitude. The Barranco Valley offers spectacular scenery with towering cliffs and giant senecio plants.
Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,950m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall—a steep but non-technical scramble. Reaching the top rewards climbers with stunning views.
The trail continues with ups and downs before arriving at Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day, allowing for rest and acclimatization.
Overnight: Karanga Camp

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

A short but steep climb leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. The environment is rocky and exposed, with strong winds possible.
After an early dinner, climbers rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.
Overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest

The summit attempt begins around midnight. The climb is steep and slow, leading to Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak.
After celebrating at the summit, climbers descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. This is a long and exhausting day.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
